The Mandy Boat Tee

I have been hugely inspired lately by the blog and Instagram feed of the ever prolific and talented Lise Tailor. She recently hosted a ‘Boxy Week’ on her blog, showcasing the stunning Boxy sweaters she knit (from Joji Locatelli’s design) and sewed (from the Trop Top pattern by Ivanne S). This reminded me I had once stumbled upon a similar pattern by Tessuti Fabrics, the Mandy Boat Tee, which is a free download.

FABRIC:

I have had this very drapy knit in my stash forever. I believe I purchased it when I was still living in Paris, i.e. over 8 years ago now (time does fly). I figured it would work well as a  neutral black top with a little extra. I obviously can’t remember the contents. It is very comfortable and smooth.

CONSTRUCTION:

As often with simple top patterns, it took more time to cut out and tape the PDF printouts than to actually sew this up. With only three pattern pieces and minimal finishing (you simply fold over the raw edges to the inside for the neckline and hems), this does go together very fast indeed. I used my serger for the main seams and my coverstitch for the hems and neckline.

ALTERATIONS:

  • This pattern is one size fits most. The pattern pieces looked huge against my body. I removed 2 inches of width at the centre front and 3 inches of width at the centre back.
  • To make this more flattering, and in keeping with Joji Locatelli’s Boxy sweater, I significantly narrowed the sleeves to get zero ease.
  • Lastly, I redrew the hemline to get a high/low effect, which I found more flattering than an even hem on such a large design. The length at the back is the same as the original, but shorter at the front.

CONCLUSION:

This is a super fun and fast top to make, and still very trendy IMO over skinny or (as here) slim jeans. It looks great over leggings as well for a cosier look. Because I breastfeed a little one at the moment, I am wearing a black tank top underneath so this is nursing friendly – just pull the hem of the tee up and the neckline of the tank top down, and this totally works as a nursing top.
